To reproduce:
- put some contacts into a group
- click group with right mouse button and go to notifications options for it
- set some alarm (sound) as notification for new message
- click OK
- wait for someone from that group to write to you
- see/hear that no alarm was triggered

This works for single contacts. Being able to do this with group is very useful
and I remember that it worked in KDE 3.x.
