I see this problem with uchicago's internal jabber server(couple of times an
hour), but not with the google server (or at least much less frequently with
the google server).  I am typically reconnected in less than a second. I
haven't a clue how to debug this but am willing to do tests people want to see.

account settings for uchicago server:
"use protocol encryption (ssl)" is checked (won't connect otherwise)
"allow plain text password" is checked (won't connect otherwise)
using default hostname and port.
