PS: I tried it on my system now (I normally don't use transparency), and I can
confirm what you write, i.e. it doesn't work with 16.08.0 (and I get the
mentioned error message in the settings), while it works when I revert to
16.04.3.

And, it also works again when I build 16.08.0 with the fix from bug#366368.
