Just tried that option on arch/gentoo/debian/freebsd(with different versions of
KDE SC). It works fine on all of them.

I haven't noticed the delayment of switching tabs from my observation above.
With or without transparency. 

And I do not have much clue. Do you run some input method? If possible, could
you check the problem in some Linux distribution instead of FreeBSD?  Or check
it in a different machine?
