#29, yes that's about what was proposed in #20

Don't forget that attributes are always present, because the characters of a
line have always at least 1 bg and fg color, even if that's the same for all of
them.

Anyway, I have changed my original patch and implemented this. I'll post the
2nd version soon to the review board.
