Thanks, Robert.  It would be great if one of the technical gurus could 
throw out some theories as to what might cause this symptom.  Anecdotally, 
it could be something particular to the Ubuntu desktop theme.

One weird observation:  If I hold down left-shift and _immediately_ swipe 
right with mouse-1 down, it marks a few characters before hitting some 
sort of time-out.  Even so, these characters do NOT make it into the cut 
buffer or clipboard.

Is there something periodic that occurs in KDE4?  Maybe something related 
to compositing or refresh?
