If it's any consolation, I'm experiencing the same problem with KDE 4.2.2 
under Ubuntu as is at least one other user.

Are you saying it didn't happen with 4.2.2?  Further, where did you get 
4.2.4 for Jaunty?  Is that from an experimental or Beta repository?  AFAI, 
4.2.2 is the official level in Ubuntu 9.04.

I feel your pain.  The lack of this feature is extremely annoying.
