More info:
One symptom is that while shift is pressed the mouse pointer blinks very fast.
As if shift is activating the "hide-cursor when typing" feature.

I also tried to install my previous konsole version
(konsole_4.2.2-0ubuntu4_amd64.deb) and after logout, ldconfig, login, I still
can't use the shift or ctrl-alt-shift to select with the mouse. Maybe this
problem as introduced in another package (kdelibs?).
