it may depend on how you use minicom - I use it two different ways (both fail like this) one is an old one (2.00.0 on redhat 7.3, run over ssh from a gentoo machine running kde3.4) the other is gentoo tip-of-tree - in the past (kde 3.3 and before) minicom would always resize the window when run - I think it has a thing about window width and doesn't like them being wider than  80 chars, doesn't seem to care much about height - you might also need to make sure you have the bottom status line turned on. The symptoms are that the status line gets written over and over again continually, clearing the screen in the process
