Same here. Without utempter installed utmp is not updated.  Therefore shutdown
wall write etc,  don't know about kwrite listening on a pty :(

FWIW it works as before with our patch (Debian Linix Woody).  But Debian
does not like utempter so I can't test full functionality.

Oswald, looks like kdm does update ?tmp file(s).   Time/interest to cut and paste
some code from kdm to kwrited?

An use full addition, it's really an bug fix, would be to ensure that after
each insert the kwrited window is on the current desktop.

	echo shutdown tommorrow > /dev/pts/x	# win pops up on current desktop

	echo shutdwon in 10 ...		# User miss the message

surprise, surprise he/she is thrown out.
