The setting for $TERM is incorrect. I had to set it in my .bashrc in order for 
it to take effect.

After some more testing, it appears that the first session in a konsole window 
always has $TERM=xterm. This is true even if I do, for example, konsole 
--type linux (where the default is $TERM=linux).

So, at this point, it looks like the bug only affects the $TERM setting. Sorry 
for the confusing initial report.
