Ah right, what happens then I guess is that less switches to the alternative 
screen, lists the file and immediately switches back. (I guess that isn't so 
much a bug as well as poor interaction of features.)

I appreciate that you contacted the less author so that we can be sure that 
these aren't bugs that are ping-ponged back and forth.
