Stephan,
I have:
* less 358
* xterm - I don't know the version, typing "xterm -version" gives an error 
and a usage mesage that lists in its option [-version], so that seems like I 
just found another bug, this time in xterm... sigh :-(
* XFree86 - I don't know, whichever comes default with Mandrake 8.1.

*** Note- I just tried "/usr/X11R6/bin/xterm.real -version" and it returned:
XFree86 4.0.3(156)

Hope that answers the above questions. But I still think "xterm -version" 
should have worked...

Anyway, I'm not sure what to make of your comment- are you agreeing with me 
that the current behaviour is problematic, or do you disagree? If you 
disagree, on what grounds?
