Comparing Strings

I noticed that the only way to compare specified files(without using a diff) 
is to provide the URL for files to compare. I was wondering if there was a way 
for two strings to be compared? This would significantly reduce the work of 
having to create temporary files when we want to compare contents of a file 
that can be edited, and then displayed again.

I just want to know if it is possible. If so I can even provide a patch for 
this functionality.
