Unable to run kompare against remote (fish) or even local files

I get the same error when I try to run kompare

  kompare fish://somewhere/path/file1 fish://somewhere/path/file2
  kompare /etc/hosts /etc/resolv.conf

The error is "Could not find our KompareViewPart"

I am running Mandriva Linux release 2008.0

With versions
lars at host:~ rpm -qa | grep -e kompare -e sdk
libkdesdk1-3.5.7-3mdv2008.0
kdesdk-kompare-3.5.7-3mdv2008.0

I tried running "kbuildsycoca" and then trying it again but to no avail.

The problem is I don't know where to begin troubleshooting this.
