sorry, I noticed it a second too late.

In Ubuntu 18.04 it's /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt5/plugins

I have had the prefix set to /usr/local to avoid conflicts with the
distro version of kmymoney. 

Prefix /usr finally worked. Adding new investments works.
