Doug,

The way I look at it, voiding a check is "unwriting" it, or acting as
if it doesn't exist. In some sense, just deleting the transaction
would work. However, because the side effect of doing that is not
knowing why you are missing a transaction for check X when you have
check numbers X-1 and X+1, you can just change the amount to $0 and put
a note in the memo that it was voided, and perhaps the reason, if you
think you will wonder why, when you look back on it next year.
Essentially, mirror what you would do in a paper check register. You
can alter the amount to $0, or if the voiding was done some days later,
you could duplicate the transaction, change it from a withdrawal to a
deposit (leaving the original amount unchanged) and comment in the memo
that this was a void of the check written on the original date.

There is nothing magic or special about voiding a check. You are just
indicating that you know it will never be cashed - usually because it
was lost or destroyed or returned uncashed. I suppose if KMM were to
actually have a transaction state of "voided" it would just change the
amount to zero, although perhaps still display the original amount.
However, that would likely be eventually more confusing than just
zeroing the amount or writing a cancelling transaction.
