I'm not an Ubuntu user, but I am a Mint user that is based off of 
Ubuntu, running KDE as a desktop.

When you insert your USB stick, do you get a notification that it is 
available?

Under KDE's file Manager, Dolphin, I would see this in the left hand 
pane.  You should also see the mounted drive within KMyMoney.

How comfortable are you on the command line?
