I almost gave the wrong answer, so it's a good thing I actually  
looked.  You can't create "categories" of accounts, but you can create  
accounts that serve only to group other accounts in the hierarchy under  
the account types.  For example, define an asset account "Retirement  
type 1" with no other information, and then you can move other accounts  
under it on the hierarchy tab of the edit account dialog for those  
accounts.

Yes.  When you first purchased the existing security in the second  
account, it should have asked if you wanted to reuse the existing  
security, I think it does so based on symbol, but I don't remember.  I  
don't know if it's possible to combine them without redoing all  
transactions in one of the two accounts - although I suppose someone  
will speak up if they know how.
