Well, after more fiddling, I did manage to get it working. If you're
interested how, please read on. Otherwise you may safely delete this
message.



This is what I have: (in ASCII art)

+ 10 Cash acccounts
        - 1010 Alice's wallet
        - 1020 Bob's wallet
        - 1030 Carl's wallet
+ 20 Bank accounts
        - 2010 ABN
        - 2020 ING Direct
+ 30 Investment accounts                (Investment type)
        + 3010 Schwab
                - 301010 - Investment   (Investment type)
                - 301020 - Brokerage    (Checking type)
- 40 Brokerage accounts                 (Checking type)



I would like "301020 - Brokerage" to go to "40 Brokerage accounts".
Editing the account and changing its hierarchy gives me the "cannot
reparent" error.

What did I do? I recreated "40 Brokerage accounts" as Asset (!) account.
And now I can safely rename and move 301020 to "4010 Schwab". See below:


+ 10 Cash acccounts
        - 1010 Alice's wallet
        - 1020 Bob's wallet
        - 1030 Carl's wallet
+20 Bank accounts
        - 2010 ABN
        - 2020 ING Direct
+ 30 Investment accounts                (Asset type!)
        + 3010 Schwab                   (Investment type)
+ 40 Brokerage accounts                 (Asset type!)
        + 4010 Schwab                   (Checking type)


I haven't checked if it also works for existing investment accounts. I
want to separate those too. Time will tell.
