I don't know if this is a new regression or if it is an old issue that has
simply not been noticed or reported. I'm pretty sure it is a side-effect of
the fact that a stock-split is one of the few transactions (add and remove
shares are two others) which is considered a valid transaction (i.e., balanced)
with only one split. The new shares are created from nothing - they do not
need to come from some other source. In fact, It CANNOT be assigned a
Category, since there is no Category for any money to come from or go to..
I think the solution to this would be to have the filtering mechanism the
reporting code uses (or the reporting code that groups transactions) recognize
those special transactions as not needing a category split rather than calling
them unassigned, even though that might be technically correct. I don't know
if perhaps that means another group of "unassigned but doesn't need to be/can't
be" (it obviously needs a better name.)
