I would probably call it "convert" instead of "merge" but the concept is valid.
 I have at least one case where a company just reinvented itself, changed the
stock symbol, and the price history was not continuous.  
I suspect this is not likely to actually get done until there is a major
overhaul of how KMM handles stocks.  Unfortunately, that is not on any schedule
yet.
I may consider creating a tracking bug to link the various individual
bugs/wishlists which are related.
