I am running vanilla ubuntu and i get kmm via PPA 
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/claydoh/kmymoney2-kde4/ubuntu trusty main

I haven’t tried in an empty file, but the workaround for me was to just restart
the app after merging, and doing the category stuff after
