Hi Jack,
First things first, I guess.  I was falling way behind in posting my 
accounts and decided to go ahead and do a reconstruct from a point in 
the past where I knew I had no problems.  Quite a lengthy process but 
KMM seems to work OK now.  I was able to use the backup function from 
File menu and successfully saved the data in a new sub folder of my 
Home/Documents.
I will try to make a clearer picture of what happened as the 
malfunctions got progressively worse with time, it wasn't just one 
problem.  My original setup was that I would use the Backup  command 
from File and save the data to a folder in my Home/Documents directory.  
I would then drag and drop a copy of that data into a similarly-named 
folder on an external hard drive, a kind of double backup.  If there was 
more than one session in a day the newer data would be prompted to 
replace the old data in each location without any problems.
Problems started about a month ago when I tried to drag and drop a copy 
of the data from a second session from my Home/Documents backup to the 
external hard drive backup (the first one would go OK). I would get a 
message saying there was an "Error Copying File" so I decided to try 
just copying once a day to the external hard drive instead of at the end 
of each posting session.  This seemed to work OK.  A little later, 
though, I started having problems even doing the backup from the File 
menu.  I suspected that my Mint 11 might be the cause of the problem but 
after nuking Mint and installing Ubuntu the problem just followed me 
until I did the reconstruct.
