I haven't viewed the ktorrent code, but if it is a poor example of separation of responsibilities as you say, I'm sure a lib-based implementation will be easier to integrate and maintain.

How is libtorrent-based support coming in the work/make_kget_cool branch? Still alpha and/or will we see it in KDE 4.0? Felix or Dario?
