I don't know about the performance of libtorrent, but ktorrent (2.0.2) is happily running over 20 torrents (and completely saturating both up and downstream on my 9Mb/1Mb connection) in 238m of virtual memory, with only 80m resident -- and that's which it's memory usage setting on "High".  CPU usage is completely negligible.

I'm not arguing against libtorrent, just saying that ktorrent already provides an efficient KDE interface to torrents, and it might be easier to integrate.
