  Not really: The status bar text states the selected items, the actions below that text act on these selected items.

  I mean, that's kind of what I did. It's just that I think the best place for this box is below the view and the status bar. I already gave my reasoning why I think this is probably the most sensible solution but feel free to try to contrive something better. It might be useful to have multiple designs to ponder about.
