I think that the (blocky) space info bar will be irritating for people, who prefer clean and easy interfaces.
We should ask the VDG what they think about showing the space information by default and what they think about the space info bar in general.
IMHO: I would replace it by a simple status text (easy fix for bug 318395) and remove the show/hide option completely.
