Query regarding GDMSESSION and DESKTOP_SESSION

First of all, I think you've got the wrong list. Try the kde-linux mailing 
list, or general Linux discussion one.

No, most surely not. They will only be set if the user logged in via gdm. 
If he logged in via console, or xdm or kdm, it won't be set.
