Check carefully compile flags for Qt:

 ./configure -system-zlib -qt-gif
-thread -system-libpng -system-libjpeg -plugin-imgfmt-mng -no-stl 
-no-xinerama -no-g++-exceptions

These are recommended by developers.kde.org.

When you cannot use qifs or jpegs, many sites using images for spacing 
will broke.

Internally KDE uses almost exlusively pngs, thus other apps will behave
