[Patches] caret mode fixes

Hello,

Now that HEAD is open again for non-showstopper bugfixes, I'd like to commit 
these two outstanding caret mode fixes.

49 fixes a crash in caret mode on tablecol elements, 55 fixes bug 66296.

ok to commit?
Is it also ok to commit caret related fixes again without prior review?
