detect dom node deletion

Hello,

If I store a reference to a dom node inside a DOM::Node object, what happens 
if the dom node is removed from the document? Will my DOM::Node object be set 
to null, or is there any other possibility to detect its removal from the 
DOM::Node itself?

I know about dom mutation events, but I think they are too heavyweight for my 
purpose. So I don't want to use them unless necessary.
