Will this be done before 3.2? In this case I'll suspend all :first-letter 
attempts.

Otherwise, I already enhanced that patch and came up with the function
RenderObject::deferredObject(long offset);
which will deliver the correct render object that corresponds to the given 
offset into the DOM string. Currently, it's only used to handle :first-letter 
cases. If you have a comprehensive restructuring of string handling in store, 
I'd like to hear about that.
