I saw that too when investigating the bugs in inline box decorations...it's 
terribly confusing and hard to follow ;(

I also tried to find a clean solution but got lost somewhere in bidi.cpp.
So eventually, at this point of the release cycle, would it be acceptable to 
ressort to more hackish/temporary fixes?
I asked that because I did not dare to propose those up to now, yet there are 
problems that badly need to be fixed in time...
