find files is so slow on my computer

Hello!

I am relatively new to linux and kde, but I have some computer experience...

The problem that I have with the 'find files' tool is that is so slow. My computer is not really new (I bought one second hand to turn it into a linux PC). It has a PII 266 CPU and 128MB of memory. I have also a 256MB swap file.

As long as I try to find a file in a small subset of my HD (one dir) it is alright-but slow-, even with wildcards. As soon as I try to do this on my entire HD the process just seems to run away. The HD is being very sollicited and my system just about freezes. The couple of times that this happened I could only get out of the situation by switching to a console, logging in as root and rebooting. That alone took about 15 minutes the last time because of all system resources being taken by the tool.

I have a 20GB HD. Use Redhat 7.3 and have installed about everything from this distribution, so about 5GB...

What can I do to remedy this? Thanks for looking into this. I have looked very hard in the archives to see if this was a common problem or known bug, but I couldn't find anything.

Regards,

Marc
