Sounds like a bug, makeViewsFollow() should open the correct dir in the dir-tree indeed.

But if I click on a directory icon, then the panel follows (might be an improvement
since 3.0.x). Ah, well, only if I'm inside a subdir of $HOME. Otherwise the 
dir isn't even in the panel, no chance it can follow :) You need to choose the
"Directory" subpanel, the one that starts at "/".

Sounds like a minor bug (especially since it follows as soon as you click on
a dir, now), report it to http://bugs.kde.org if you feel it should be fixed :)
