OK, so the ultimate solution is to switch to Kexi 2.4 (from Calligra)
later this year
(http://community.kde.org/Calligra/Schedules/2.4/Release_Plan) once
it's released.
You project files will be handled smoothly since Kexi has just moved
to Calligra from KOffice.

Short-term temporary solution for Kexi < 2.4 is to use text types for
dates if that works for you (sorting may not work as expected, etc.).
