installing to home directory and a documentation question

How do I make it so that a project (using KDCOP and KParts) installs to a home 
directory?

I can go in and manually change the prefix in the config.in (or is 
that .in.in?) file, but how do I do it in KDevelop?

Also, the documentation dealing with subprojects, targets, etc. is incomplete. 
Is there any online documentation pertaining to how to use this stuff? 
Anything would be helpful.
