cannot create "Hello World" (1st KDE app)

I was having the same problem.  There seems to be quite a few others who
are experiencing the same issue, especially with KDE 3.2.  Though there
were a lot of people complaining of the same problem, there were no
resolutions.  

I'm running a Debian box (Libranet, actually) and had all of the proper
packages installed.  One thing to check is to make sure the versions all
match up between GCC and QT packages.  You included your QT packages
which are showing 3.3.  Make sure your GCC package is the same.  Also
make sure there are no errant symlinks getting caught before the QT
packages of the proper version.

That is what most people responded with and it makes a lot of sense. 
Unfortunately, it did not work for me.  I had to download QT from
Trolltech and install it manually.  It may have broken by package
manager for QT but I was unable to compile anything at all.  ./configure
would fall on the floor every time.

Installing QT manually seems to have solved the problem for me.
