Infinite Make Loop

I am running KDE 2.0.1 on KDE 2.2.1 and a fresh install of Mandrake 8.1.

I just created a new C++ console application project and hit F8 to build.
The first couple times it built no problem.  Then suddenly it started going
through this long procedure where it kept saying things like "Trying rule
pattern" and took a really long time to complete.  Every time I hit F8, the
time to complete would double.

It's at the point now where I can't even compile just a new, empty project.
What can I do to fix this?
