Record / playback feature ?

Greetings,

    I assume that you are referring to the Record and XTest extensions. I have never used these,
although I have used the XTrap extension (long since obsolete), which is conceptionally very similiar in
use. Take a look at the documentation (in Postscript) typically contained in the package XFree86-doc,
which is usually installed under /usr/share/doc/XFree86-doc-4.x.x/Xext/

    Btw, sounds like an interesting project!
