Werner,

kdevelop 1.4 uses KRun - which opens files according to their MIME-type.
That means you get an "open with" window popping up when selecting a
designer file. Then select the designer and check the "use this
permanent" option so designer is registered for opening ui files. If
instead KDE detects the designer file as a text file and displays it in
the editor, open KControl and edit your Mime-types. Add *.ui and select 
"designer" to open files with that extension.
