bug? (tar.gz distribution loses compiler options?)

Hi,

I have a project with extra compiler options (-DLINUX).
I create a tar.gz distribution, unpack to another directory, run
./configure, and make.
The -DLINUX is not passed to gcc, resulting in the build failing.
