Sorry for not including more info:

gcc version egcs-2.91.66 19990314 (egcs-1.1.2 release)
qt-2.3.1
kde-2.1

The above mentioned fault is consistent on multiple systems and hence
a localized problem can be excluded to a high degree of certainty.
