static libraries corrupt?

Must be something wrong with your libraries. We´re mostly using SuSE and
never had problems (except on 6.4 with a wrong libjpeg.la). You should
have a look into that la file which is a script. Maybe there´s something
wrong in there like with the libjpeg.la ?

Also you should update you compiler to gcc-2.95.2.
