giflib30 ?? -- How does configure work?

How does configure know that my link from libgif3.0.0 to libungif3.0.0 is
not libgif? Even the function calls are the same. The two libraries are
supposed to be source-compatible... I am still trying to figure out if
installing the "real" libgif3.0.0 is the right thing to do.
