tabs in KEdit

Hello,

please give me a hint. I am writing a simple editor application based on
KEdit. I want the TAB character expanded to a user defined value. Right now
it expands to 8 blanks, as in the KEdit application. I would like a
behaviour like in kWrite. Where should I start ?
