wish: better project error handling

Hi,

For those ones who are not very familiar with distclean, autoconf,
automake, configure and make there could be better error messages.

For instance:
After calling Distclean from the menu, pressing the "Build" toolbutton
returns only a (for some people) quite strange message:
   make: *** No targets.  Stop.
   *** error ***
There could popup a hint like 
   "Error. Cannot compile because of missing Makefile. Start Configure
to create such one automatically!"
