I think that hits the nail on the head. While it is *cool* when it works, the 
workaround is simply much worse that the alternative.

I note that bashcompletion also works in this way, and I have never been 
annoyed by that.

Hmm..

IDEA:

As the fancy solution, it could replace if and only if I start editing in the 
middle of an existing symbol.
