You should subscribe yourself to kde-core-devel :) There's a patch
up there since today (IIRC) that adds Tree and TreeDetail mode to
KDirOperator. So your wish is granted. We can choose one as default and
users that like the fileiconview can still try to use that in the
toolview.

I'll be doing a deeper code-review and test tomorrow (hopefully) and if
we wait a few days hopefully Peter Penz and Rafael Lopez give their "ok"
too (they both worked significantly on the class).
